Research and Citation Resources

Podcasts are downloadable audio and video files from the internet. You can listen to or watch a podcast on your computer or through a portable device (like an iPod). There are thousands of podcasts that span a broad range of topics. Below is a recommended collection of some of the available podcasts that might be of interest to botany students.

Nature - Each week Nature publishes a free audio show. Every show features the best from the week's edition of Nature including interviews with the people behind the scene, and in-depth commentary and analysis from journalists covering science around the world. There is also a blog on the site that facilitates discussion of each episode. All podcasts are archived on the site back to the first episode in October 2005.

Science - Science's weekly podcasts takes you on a tour of some interesting stories in the journal and on its sister sites.

Scientific American - Offers two podcast series, 60-Second Science and Science Talk. 60-Second Science is posted every weekday and contains one minute reports that explore an interesting scientific topic each. Science Talk is posted weekly and covers a variety of scientific topics in each 20 minute episode.

New Scientist - No longer has its weekly 30 minute podcasts, instead offering short videos on a range of current science topics you can subscribe to via RSS, including "NS TV".

The Naked Scientists Podcasts - The Naked Scientists are a media-savvy group of physicians and researchers from Cambridge University who use radio, live lectures, and the Internet to strip science down to its bare essentials, and promote it to the general public. Their award winning BBC weekly radio programme, The Naked Scientists, reaches a potential audience of 6 million listeners across the east of England, and also has an international following on the web.

Digg Science Videos & Podcasts - Digg is a website that unites people on the web around their interests. Everything on Digg has been submitted by the Digg community. If you like something on the site you can "Digg It" (vote for it) to affirm its usefulness or "Bury It" if you dislike it. This site is great for news and for keeping up to date with popular sites on the web. The Videos section now incorporates Podcasts and has special categories for Environment or General Sciences.

Science Friday - Science Friday is a weekly science talk show, broadcast live over American public radio stations. Each week a panel of expert guests join host Ira Flatow to discuss science topics that are in the news and try to bring an educated, balanced discussion to bear on the scientific issues at hand. Science Friday's host, Ira Flatow, is a veteran American science journalist.
